Transport

Presentation

Paris has an extensive but quite complex transportation network

  • above the ground:
    • buses
    • tramway (3 lines driving around the city)
  • under the ground:
    • ratpmetro
    • regional train (RER) connecting the suburbs.

Stations can be recognized with the following signs:
trambusrermetro
Transport system is globally operated by the local operator (RATP) with two exceptions:

  • RER is co-operated with national railway company (SNCF);
  • private bus lines are also connecting the airports to the city.

Metro plan

In order to prepare your stay, maps for bus, metro and RER lines can be found on the internet: http://www.ratp.info/touristes/index.php?langue=en&rub=reperer&cat=plan-metro.

By typing in the address, station name or monument name, on the RATP web site (http://www.ratp.info/touristes/index.php?langue=en&rub=reperer) you can find your route. Just be careful and specify the exact time of the day if you expect the travel early in the morning or late in the night: RER and buses get scarce during the night.

You may also download the Metro application for your PDA or smartphone: http://chotto.free.fr/tatami/Metro/index-en.html

Fares

The regular ticket costs 1.60 € and enables the customer:

  • to travel on:
    • the whole of the metro and the Montmartre funicular
    • the RER (RATP and SNCF) within Paris
    • the RATP buses in Paris and the suburbs (except for lines with special fares)
  • to make connections on the whole of the metro and the RER in Paris
  • to make bus/bus and bus/tram connections.

A one day pass (Mobilis) is available (5.80€ to travel within Paris, price is increasing if you want to gain access to the suburbs).

To go from the airport to Paris:

  • Air France buses (14€ from Roissy to Gare de Lyon)
  • RoissyBus (operated by RATP) between Opera and Roissy Airport (8,90 €)
  • OrlyBus (operated by RATP) between Denfert Rochereau and Orly Airport (6,30 €)
  • RER line B (8,40€ from Roissy)
  • taxi (around 60€ ; many of them accept credit cards compliant with EMV standards)
